Shopping online safely with M-Pesa: how to avoid the common scams
Fake shops, "pay a deposit first" and reversal tricks: what to watch for, and how a genuine M-Pesa checkout works.

M-Pesa makes paying online quick, and that convenience is exactly what scammers rely on. Knowing how a genuine checkout works is the best protection.
What a genuine M-Pesa checkout looks like
- You place the order on the website and enter your phone number.
- An M-Pesa prompt (STK push) appears on your own phone showing the business name and amount.
- You enter your M-Pesa PIN on your phone, never on a website or in a chat.
- You receive the M-Pesa SMS and the order shows as paid in your account.
Never share your M-Pesa PIN with anyone, including people who say they are from Safaricom, a bank or a shop. No genuine business needs it.
Red flags
- Prices far below every other shop, especially for iPhones and gaming laptops.
- "Send a deposit to this personal number to reserve the item."
- The seller only communicates on WhatsApp and has no website, address or reviews.
- Pressure to pay quickly because "someone else wants it".
- A message saying they sent you money "by mistake" and asking you to send it back. Check your actual M-Pesa balance first; these SMS messages are often fake.
Check the shop before you buy
- A physical location or a clear delivery and return policy.
- Real customer reviews from verified buyers.
- Order tracking and a receipt for every purchase.
At SkopeSana every payment goes through an M-Pesa prompt on your own phone, every order can be tracked from your account, and reviews come only from customers who bought the product.
