SSD or more RAM? The upgrade that actually makes an old laptop fast
If your laptop takes minutes to start, the fix is usually a solid-state drive, not more memory. Here is how to tell which upgrade you need.

Slow laptops are rarely slow because of the processor. In most cases the storage drive or a shortage of memory is holding everything back. The good news is that both are cheap to fix.
Read the symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Takes 2–5 minutes to start, apps open slowly | Old hard drive (HDD) | SSD |
| Fast to start, slows down with many tabs or apps open | Not enough RAM | More RAM |
| Fan loud and laptop hot, everything stutters | Dust, old thermal paste | Cleaning service |
Check in 30 seconds
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. If Disk sits near 100% while you work, you need an SSD. If Memory is above 85%, you need more RAM.
Why an SSD makes the biggest difference
A solid-state drive reads data around 5 to 10 times faster than a spinning hard drive, and far faster still for the small files Windows uses at startup. A laptop that took three minutes to boot will typically start in 15 to 30 seconds.
- SATA SSD: fits almost every laptop from the last 12 years in place of the old drive.
- NVMe SSD: faster again, but only if your laptop has an M.2 NVMe slot. Check the model's manual first.
When more RAM is the answer
For Windows 11 with a browser, Office and WhatsApp Desktop, 8 GB is the practical minimum. Developers and designers should aim for 16 GB. Many business laptops have two memory slots, so you can add a second stick instead of replacing the first. Match the type (DDR3L, DDR4) and ideally the speed.
What it costs
A 256 GB SSD and fitting usually cost less than a tenth of a new laptop, and it can add years of comfortable use. If your laptop is older than a 4th-generation Core i5, though, put that money towards a newer refurbished machine instead.
