Make your laptop battery last: charging habits that actually work

Lithium batteries wear out from heat and from sitting at 100%. A few simple habits can keep yours healthy for years.

Every laptop battery loses capacity over time, but how fast depends mostly on two things: heat and how long it sits fully charged. You do not need to let it run flat, and you do not need special apps.

Two myths to drop

  • "Drain it to 0% every time." That was true for old nickel batteries. Deep discharges actually stress lithium-ion cells.
  • "Never leave it plugged in." Modern laptops stop charging at 100%. The problem is the time spent at 100% while warm, which many laptops let you limit.

Habits that help

  1. Keep it cool. Use the laptop on a table, not a bed or your lap, so the vents can breathe. Don't leave it in a hot car.
  2. Use the charge limit if your laptop has one. HP (in BIOS: Adaptive Battery Optimizer), Dell (Dell Power Manager → Primarily AC use) and Lenovo (Vantage → Conservation mode) can stop charging around 80%. Turn it on if the laptop is mostly on your desk.
  3. Stay roughly between 20% and 80% in daily use when you can.
  4. Use the right charger. A weak charger makes the battery work harder; a cheap fake one can damage it.
  5. Store at about 50% if you won't use the laptop for weeks.
Replace it now if: the base no longer sits flat, the touchpad is pushed up, or the case is bulging. A swollen battery is a fire risk. Stop using the laptop and have the battery replaced.

Check your battery's health

On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt and open the report it saves. When Full charge capacity falls below about half of Design capacity, a new battery will feel like a new laptop.
